'Thor: Ragnarok' Star Chris Hemsworth Was Overjoyed to Stop Wearing His 'Thor' Wig

When the first official images from Thor: Ragnarok came out, the first thing many people noticed was how Thor's flowing blond hair had been cut, and that this somehow turned the God of Thunder into a brunette.

Once the trailers came out, we learned that Thor was forcibly given a buzzcut by the Grandmaster (played by Jeff Goldblum) after the villain forced him to become a gladiator in his alien arena. Nobody was more excited about this plot development than Chris Hemsworth, because he was really tired of wearing that stupid wig whenever he suited up to play Thor.

According to an interview he gave in an issue of Entertainment Weekly (via io9), Hemsworth had been growing bored with his Thor character. Thus, the decision to take away his hammer, his Asgardian home, and most importantly his hair made a huge difference in helping Hemsworth revitalize the superhero for Ragnarok. He explains:

Opening quote
"When I didn't have the wig on, I instantly felt like I could move and speak and react differently. Once we aesthetically stripped a lot of that away, it allowed the whole thing to take on a different attitude. It felt like a completely different character, and that was hugely liberating and freeing as an actor because I had become a bit bored with myself."
Closing quote

If you want a visual on how different Hemsworth looks with and without his Thor wig, compare the photo above with his new haircut to this video with his classic locks:

Based on what we've seen so far, it sounds like this decision to go wigless has been working out well. While he's usually great to see in the Avengers films because of the stoic and yet easily confused personality he adds to the team, his solo adventures have been some of Marvel's weaker entries in their MCU, and Thor: The Dark World was especially a low point.

The character has been around for long enough that he's due for an update, and the short-haired Thor who's been appearing in Ragnarok trailers does seem to act much more naturally while still being unmistakably the God of Thunder. He's wittier too, but that's more because of director Taika Waititi, a veteran comedy director who's been allowing Hemsworth to improvise a lot more.

Either way, they still haven't given an in-universe explanation for why his hair is brown now. Clearly, Thor has a case of Tyrion/Jaime Lannister syndrome from Game of Thrones, both of which abandoned their blond wigs over the course of the show.

Thor: Ragnarok comes out November 3, 2017.
