Newly Revealed Traitor-Hunting Stormtroopers Will Chase Down Finn in 'The Last Jedi'

One of the most unique elements of the otherwise pretty unoriginal Star Wars Episode VII is the character of Finn, a Stormtrooper who rejects his programming in a desperate bid to flee from the First Order's bloody war. The idea of a faceless drone having a personality and free will is an interesting concept, considering the existing Star Wars ethos that these troopers are completely expendable and totally evil.

It looks like The Last Jedi will explore this further, as we finally learn why Finn is so eager to put as much distance between himself and the First Order as possible: traitors don't get off lightly, and anyone who runs will eventually face the wrath of the Judicials, who are tasked with making sure that desertion doesn't look like fun.

We've already heard something of these troopers, with their partially matte black helmets and unique energy weapons, but now a toy leak on Reddit has revealed their purpose within the story:

Thanks to Ebay, we have the character description for the Executioner Stormtrooper. The first order is cracking down on future Finns from StarWarsLeaks

Essentially, these soldiers are tasked with tracking down First Order deserters and executing them, and will be on the trail of Finn in The Last Jedi as they attempt to punish him for treason. Sure, the idea of sending a small squad of troops to hunt down deserters seems like an odd use of resources, but so is building a giant death laser and then skimping on security guards. The First Order has some confused priorities. Here's a video that gives a closer look at the Executioner/Judicial:

From what we've seen thus far, it seems that Finn's role in The Last Jedi, alongside a new character played by Kellie May Tran, will involve sneaking into a First Order facility in disguise. It might be at some point along this mission that the Judicials, also known as Executioners in some promotional materials, will get their claws on Finn.

As fun as this all sounds (it's clearly an idea that's grown out of the popularity of watching Finn fight with the trooper known by fans as TR-8R in The Force Awakens), it's a shame that Finn's continued battle against the First Order will involve nameless enemies attempting to enact revenge. There's some poetry in seeing Finn fight against soldiers wearing his former uniform, but these scenes would surely carry more weight if he were to find himself face-to-face with Captain Phasma, who now has additional beef with Finn after being flung down a garbage chute.

Here's hoping that Rian Johnson finds some way to breathe dramatic tension and emotion into the role that the Judicials will play. Considering that the whole point of Finn's character arc is that sometimes evil minions can be people too, it weakens the message somewhat if he instantly turns around and unashamedly slaughters a bunch of other troopers without a second thought.
