Say what you like about Game of Thrones Season Seven, but the battle scenes were absolutely incredible. GoT is, without a doubt, the most gorgeously cinematic modern television series, and no expense has been spared in making the fights between legions of disposable, incredibly flammable men and giant, angry dragons look as believable as possible.

This has largely been made possible thanks to a very generous digital effects budget, as a newly released VFX video from iLoura reveals. While your brain probably never questioned the realism of what you were looking at when you watched Season Seven's fourth episode, most of what is on display during the episode's big battle was assembled by computers.

If anything, this video moves a little too quickly, so it's worth going back and watching it again in slow motion to see just how much effort went into every single frame of this footage. Animation and digital effects studio iLoura take relatively simple footage of a few warriors on horseback and seamlessly pepper in additional, wholly digital troops to turn what otherwise would have looked like a very small encounter into a huge battle that fills the landscape with death and ruin.

The real triumph here is how little the CGI is noticed in the finished product. It's obvious, of course, that the dragon is a digital creation (real dragons are notoriously difficult to work with on a television set), but most viewers won't give a second thought to walls of soldiers and horses that look believable enough to trick the eye for the split second they're on the screen. Perhaps the thick clouds of smoke and fire help to obscure the digital extras' artificial nature, but the fact that a TV show can pull something off that used to be restricted to major motion pictures like The Two Towers is still impressive.

Game of Thrones Season Eight is expected to return in late 2018/early 2019.
