New 'Star Wars' Movie Trilogy to Come From 'Last Jedi' Director Rian Johnson
Lucasfilm/Disney
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still a month away at this point. But apparently Disney is very happy with what they've seen so far, because they've just given the director a huge new role in shaping the Star Wars universe.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced today that they've given Last Jedi director Rian Johnson a green light to develop an entirely new trilogy of Star Wars spinoff films once he's finished with this current one. Disney CEO Bon Iger was the first to rather casually drop the big news in a conference about the company's finances, but an official statement was rushed out shortly afterward to confirm it.

While there are precious few details about what these three new movies will focus on, we do know what they're not focusing on: anything relating to the Skywalker family. In a move to start rebuilding the Expanded Universe through the movies, Johnson's new trilogy will follow new characters in a corner of the galaxy that's never been explored before.

This could mean the trilogy is set anywhere from the Outer Rim to the Old Republic, so without any further details yet, fans can only speculate.

There's no release date as of yet for any of them, but it's expected they won't be coming around until after Episode IX hits theaters at the end of 2019. And apparently, Johnson is only confirmed to be writing and directing the first of these three films, although he'll still have creative control over the general direction of whatever this new story ends up being.

While promoting the new trilogy announcement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy heaped praises on Johnson in an official statement:

Opening quote
"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He's a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."
Closing quote

For anyone who guessed that Johnson would take over Episode IX directing duties after the original director Colin Trevorrow was kicked off the project, it seems like Disney one-upped that and gave him something better instead (J.J. Abrams is currently in charge of IX). For all the Star Wars directors Disney and Lucasfilm have lost recently, Johnson seems to be one who's sticking around.

While the fact that they're venturing into new territory is exciting, it's hard to get completely hyped when we still don't know whether Johnson did a good job with The Last Jedi. Unlike with the prequels, Disney seems to be much stricter about quality control than George Lucas was, so it's likely The Last Jedi will be fine; but still, this announcement may have worked better once fans have seen just how well Rian Johnson can make a Star Wars movie.

Johnson himself seems to actually agree with this sentiment, as he now hopes more than ever that the fans will enjoy his work next month:

But the real takeaway from this announcement is Star Wars is here to stay, long after the New Trilogy and all of its Rogue Ones and Han Solos are wrapped up. Disney also announced that some sort of television series is in the works (albeit exclusively through their upcoming Disney-only streaming service). But it's good to know that even more generations of kids will now be raised on adventures from a galaxy far, far away.

But until then, Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out December 15, 2017.
