This is the Last Jedi movie trailer we've been waiting for.

So far all the trailers we've gotten for Last Jedi have recycled similar footage, focussing on the dark and foreboding

From Luke Skywalker's sad, gruff voice saying that the Jedi have to end, to shadowy figures in dark rooms and great halls, to troubled looks on the faces of everyone not wearing a Stormtrooper helmet, Disney and Lucasfilm have made it clear that we're not getting The Star Wars Holiday Special.

A new TV spot that takes a slightly different approach, premiering new footage and quotes that suggest that not every second of the 150-minute runtime will be doom and gloom.

The 15-second spot opens with Finn smiling at someone off camera and saying the iconic line, "May the force be with you."

Then an X-Wing explodes, Finn cheers, the voiceover guy reminds us of the release date, and we hear a new line from Poe Dameron (and BB-8, if you count that as a line).

There's playful lightsaber twirling from Rey on Ahch-to, which transitions into a less playful twirl of Captain Phasma's new staff, and then the trailer ends with footage we've already seen of Phasma and Finn facing off as things burn all around them.

Even the theme that plays over the spot is more upbeat than in previous spots and trailers.

To be fair, you could probably make a film like Sophie's Choice have a lighter tone if all you showed was 15 seconds of it, but because it's a Star Wars movie it's fair to assume that no matter how dark things get, there will be some levity for toy-selling sake.

The clip only includes characters who were introduced in The Force Awakens, which may or may not be a coincidence.

The plan for Disney/Lucasfilm in the future is to move away from the Skywalker family and explore more of the universe, and you can't do that by constantly reminding people that Luke, Leia, and Chewie are still in the fray.

Four days after it surfaced on the internet, this spot has still not been posted to the official Star Wars YouTube channel, so it's unclear where it came from or if/when it will air on television.

December 15 is a month and a day away, so we don't really need to see another trailer or TV spot, just bring on the porgs.
