'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Might Show a Power Struggle in the Resistance
Lucasfilm
We're less than a month away from the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi now, and things are ramping up. With excitement and advertising buzz comes increasingly tantalizing spoilers, so be careful what you read about Star Wars over the next few weeks if you want to go in fresh. So possible spoilers for The Last Jedi below.

If, on the other hand, you're one of the many Star Wars fans that can't get enough of the upcoming movie, then Oscar Isaac (who plays ace pilot Poe Dameron) has some intriguing spoilers to share surrounding Admiral Holdo, the new character played by Laura Dern, and her relationship with Carrie Fisher's General Organa.

While Dern herself has noted that she's in danger of facing the full wrath of the Disney Empire should she reveal any spoilers about the movie before its release, Isaac is clearly a little more laid back about dropping major plot points into an interview. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Isaac explained that Dameron ends up having a very complicated relationship with Holdo following an event that puts her in charge of the Resistance:

Opening quote
"It's definitely appropriate that they've paired us because a lot of the friction and conflict comes between Poe and that relationship with Admiral Holdo, who is this person that's been - at least temporarily - put in charge of the Resistance."
Closing quote

From the sounds of it, some turn of events causes Holdo to take the reins of the Resistance from Leia Organa. Isaac's comment ties in with rumors that have been surrounding Admiral Holdo from pretty much the moment her character was announced - it had been claimed that Holdo would somehow represent a schism within the Resistance which would put General Organa under pressure.

From a narrative perspective, this is one of the smartest things that can happen with the Resistance. As much as the two major opposing forces in the new movies resemble the Evil Galactic Empire and the plucky Rebel Alliance, the power dynamics between the two make things more difficult. The Resistance may struggle to gain attention from the wider galactic leadership, but it is most certainly the voice of authority, while the First Order are the underdogs this time, acting from their own secret bases and trying to overthrow the existing government.

The problem with the First Order is that their Imperial practices, such as marching around in white armor and allowing grunts to get used up as cannon fodder, has already been proven ineffective - after all, the Empire had far greater numbers than the First Order, but still managed to mess things up using this strategy. Something needs to happen to make the First Order feel like more of a threat, and the smartest plan for The Last Jedi is to weaken the Resistance in order to even the playing field a little.

If Admiral Holdo is to lead a miniature resistance within the Resistance itself, it could make the First Order feel more deadly as a result. General Organa would be too distracted clearing out her own house to adequately focus on invaders, and if Holdo sweeps in and takes control only to prove that she's inept as a leader, the movie's villains can appear as a genuine threat despite having proven pretty much useless even before Starkiller Base was destroyed.

We'll have to wait and see what chain of events might lead Holdo to take control of the Resistance - it could simply be that Leia is off on a diplomatic mission (we know those always go well for her), or she could be in danger, should a telling scene from one of the movie's trailers proves to be as accurate as it looks (although that editing is almost certainly not how the scene will play out in the finished movie).

Whatever's going on, we don't have long to wait now. Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out December 15, 2017.
