Netflix Will Adapt John Scalzi's 'Old Man's War' Into a Movie

Despite being a fairly well-known science fiction author, John Scalzi hasn't seen any of his books adapted for film or television yet, although some attempts have been made. But then again, the current Netflix powerhouse has never given it a shot until now.

Because according to Deadline, the streaming service just acquired the rights to Scalzi's Hugo Award-nominated Old Man's War, his debut novel from 2005. The plan is to create a Netflix-exclusive movie, and if it does well, this could open up the door to movie adaptations of the other five novels in his Old Man's War series. But we're getting ahead of ourselves there.

The story of Old Man's War follows an elderly soldier named John Perry who's recruited into the Colonial Defense Forces, and given a fancy, upgraded younger body so he can fight wars in space (although things start to get complicated shortly after). It was previously picked up by Syfy back in 2014, to be adapted as Ghost Brigades, and even before that it was picked up by Paramount, but nothing came of either project.

So if this new movie has any shot, it's because of the massive amount of original shows and films being pumped out from Netflix right now; they've only recently begun cancelling shows more frequently, and it quickly makes replacements to fill those spaces. The odds of Netflix not making something right now is a stretch, so if it acquired the rights to Old Man's War, then Old Man's War will probably be made.

Speaking on his blog Whatever, Scalzi (who will serve as an executive producer on the movie) explained that he just recently got the rights back after the last couple attempts at a movie/show petered out, and he's more optimistic than usual that Netflix could see this one through.

When he - sort of interviewing himself - asked whether he was excited, he said:

Opening quote
"Hell, yes. One, because I would love to see an OMW movie. But also, two, Netflix is a place where a lot of fantastic entertainment is happening these days. It's trying a lot of things and taking a lot of chances, and most people I know who are working with Netflix are thrilled about being there right now. It really seems like it could be a great place for the OMW universe.
Closing quote

Scalzi is a pretty prolific author (in regards to both his novels and his social media presence), also known for his Hugo Award-winning Redshirts in 2013, a comedy exploring the unfortunate lives of the "red-shirted" extras in a Star Trek-type of world, and the clichéd deaths they're all doomed to die. That was also supposed to become a television show on FX at some point, but that doesn't seem to be going smoothly either.

So for fans of the author, this might be the first time an adaptation actually works out. We should find out fairly soon whether it's moving along, as casting announcements and other updates come out, but in the meantime, we'll have to continue to wait for Old Man's War - and possibly its sequels, The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony, Zoe's Tale, The Human Division, and The End of All Things.
