'Ready Player One' Trailer Turns Virtual Reality Into a Dangerous Game
Warner Bros.
For anyone confused by Ready Player One, the upcoming Steven Spielberg movie based on Ernest Cline's novel, this new trailer clears things up a lot.

The last teaser was mostly just a collection of sci-fi scenes and 1980s Easter eggs, and while critics of the book might argue that there's not much else to show, the new trailer explains the movie's premise much more effectively: in the year 2045, society is mostly in the dumps and everyone ignores it by spending all their time in a virtual reality MMO called OASIS.

When the game's founder, an eccentric and unimaginably wealthy recluse named James Halliday, suddenly passes away, his video will declares that anyone who can find a hidden Easter egg inside OASIS will inherit his vast fortune and control of the virtual world where everybody spends their lives. Naturally, things turn into a digitized bloodbath as the search begins.

Check out the trailer below:

Right off the bat, it's clear Spielberg is changing some things from Cline's novel, for better or worse. The hero, a poverty-stricken teenager named Wade Watts (played by Tye Sheridan, who recently played young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse), has a more distorted and very blue OASIS avatar - which goes by "Parzival," his OASIS username - while the avatar of presumably Art3mis (Olivia Cooke from Bates Motel) resembles a red elf creature.

And perhaps unsurprisingly, Spielberg seems to be ramping up the action here. A meeting between Parzival and Art3mis mentions a resistance forming against the evil corporation who wants to kill anybody that might reach the Easter egg before they do, which was in the book, but the stakes seem higher: it might just be manipulative editing, but one moment seemed to show an avatar's death killing the user in real life.

Warner Bros. also released a poster the day before, which has gotten a decent amount of press on its own, mostly focusing on the unfortunate perspective flub which makes Wade Watts appear to have alien legs:

And of course, it's not Ready Player One unless we point out the tons of hidden Easter eggs in just this trailer. And it's not just nostalgic nods to the '80s; nods to everything from the past several decades pop up. In OASIS, there's apparently no copyright laws, because players can create avatars and objects based on anything.

At just a cursory glance, you can spot Speed Racer's Mach-5, Tracer from Overwatch, the Iron Giant, the demonic Chucky doll, a Gundam robot, a Tron light cycle, and plenty more if you check each corner of the video. In that sense, the trailer is already doing a good job of recreating the Easter egg hunt in the story.

Ready Player One hits theaters on March 30, 2018.
