'Stargate Origins' Prequel Series Wraps Filming With a New Teaser

The next Stargate series (although it's technically just a miniseries) is getting closer, and while there's no set release date as of yet, production seems to be rolling pretty smoothly.

In a new teaser for Stargate Origins, a ten-part prequel set to come out sometime next year, MGM's official fan website Stargate Command showed off a bunch of behind-the scenes-footage, culminating in an announcement that the planet-hopping adventure has now wrapped filming. Or, we assume it's a planet-hopping adventure; there's some very prominent Stargates on display, but we've seen no characters hop through them just yet.

While there's not too much in the way of plot details, we do get another good look at the show's Egyptian setting, which could potentially be Giza (where the first Stargate is found in the original 1994 movie) or possibly the franchise's Egyptian-themed planet of Abydos. That will probably be revealed quickly once the series begins, but in the meantime, see the footage below:

This now marks the second Origins teaser to focus more on behind-the-scenes fare instead of actual footage, but to be fair, they weren't done filming until now. An official trailer is ideally on the way soon, but there's no telling how far off that could be.

In the meantime, here's what we know about Origins: it's ten episodes which are each ten minutes long, which follow a young Catherine Langford (played by Ellie Gail), the daughter of the original scientist who discovered the existence of Stargates in Egypt. So it's far from an official new series - at 100 minutes long, it's more of a movie - and very far from a continuation of any plot threads from SG-1, Atlantis, or Universe, but it's something.

Perhaps most inconvenient about Origins is that it'll be exclusive to the Stargate Command streaming website, which is aiming to become a central haven for the franchise's fanbase. The upside is that if this works out, there's a good chance we'll get even more Stargate afterward, perhaps even a full-fledged series somewhere down the line. But not yet.

MGM is banking on the Stargate fanbase being willing to sign up for yet another streaming service, much like CBS is using Star Trek: Discovery to bring in Trek fans to CBS All Access. Time will tell whether that's successful.

Stargate Origins is expected to come out sometime in 2018 on the Stargate Command website.
