'The Electric State' Art Book Will Become a Russo Brothers Movie
Kickstarter/Simon Stålenhag
The Electric State, a sci-fi narrative art book by artist Simon Stålenhag, only recently finished crowdfunding on Kickstarter this past summer, but a movie deal is already in its future. Which might be bizarre, if the book wasn't so cool looking.

According to Deadline, the Russo Brothers Studio just won a bidding war for The Electric State's movie rights, and are looking to attach It director Andy Muschietti to the project. The Russo brothers themselves, Joe and Anthony Russo, will stay on the film as producers.

If the Russo brothers sound familiar at all, and even if they don't, you've definitely heard of their work before. They've made some of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having co-directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and its sequel Captain America: Civil War, and they're about to really increase their sci-fi credentials when their next movie Avengers: Infinity War comes out next summer.

The Electric State isn't just an art book, and it blurs the lines between that and an illustrated novel (hence its classification as a "narrative art book"). There is a story, which follows a girl and her robot as they cross the United States in a futuristic but post-apocalyptic version of the 1990s.

In fact, the story is considered to be a sci-fi western, which is difficult to come by. Serenity might've been the last good sci-fi western movie, and we have little else besides Westworld in the realm of television. So more is always good.

There's plenty of potential for a feature-length movie here, and the cinematographer already has his work cut out for him. Stålenhag's art is stylized and very distinctive, and recreating it in a film could create some Blade Runner-esque visuals combined with a healthy dose of the monstrous Disney-looking robots that seem to roam around in The Electric State's world.

And best of all, even if the Russo brothers are just producing and not directing, they have signed up Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely for screenwriting duties - the two have written all of Joe and Anthony Russo's Marvel movies, from Winter Soldier to the upcoming Infinity War and Avengers 4, so they have a good track record for the job.

The Electric State movie is probably a few years away at this point, assuming everything goes smoothly from here on out.
