New Yorkers Fall Victim To Hilarious 'X-Files' Alien Prank
A trend I'm thankful for in pop culture marketing is the return of the prank video. Although most often seen with horror film campaigns, where unsuspecting civilians will be scared witless by girls crawling out of televisions or people being force-choked to the ceiling of elevators, a promotional team in New York City pulled off a glorious alien prank to tease the return of The X-Files on FOX.
Animatronic gray alien bodies and arms were installed in newspaper dispensers along with a fog machine and hidden cameras. When beleaguered New Yorkers went to read the headlines – which read "ALIENS AMONG US" – they were greeted by visitors from another world reaching out to touch them.
Just when they thought the prank was done and the jump scare was over, an alien body popped out of the next dispenser, and a team of "agents" appeared on the scene to quarantine the area.
The X-Files is set to hit FOX for a 10-episode run beginning on January 8, Decider reports. Agents Mulder and Scully are back, there's more creepy, extraterrestrial stuff going down, and judging by the teasers we've gotten so far, there's also more red tape and conspiracies to deal with. The 2016 return of the sci-fi drama was a risk that paid off for the fans and for the network, so we'll see if they can pull it off again in 2018.
