Pacific Rim Movie Preview
Pacific Rim opens on wide release this weekend and many are tipping Guillermo del Toro's blockbuster to be one of the most entertaining movies of the summer. We know there are giant aliens emerging from the sea, we also know humans construct giant robots to battle these aliens, but what does all this mean?! What can we expect from a film with this most awesome of concepts?
- The Giant Alien Bad Guys (Kaiju)
As you would expect from a Guillermo del Toro production, the alien Kaiju that rise from the sea to terrorize Earth will be beautifully constructed. Trailers have shown these behemoths will come in many forms. Some fly, others are just wonderfully ferocious, but all of them are big, with many resembling giant versions of Rhinos and other Earthly beasts. Warner Bros is probably going to make a fortune in merchandise sales from these guys...
- The Robotic Good Guys (Jaegers)
No, not the sickly German liqueur favoured by frat boys and party girls, these Jaegers are actually gigantic robots piloted by 2 mind-melded humans. Created by humans to tackle the Kaiju threat, these weapons of mass destruction are just as varied in their appearance as the alien foes they face. Some of these guys look like the archetypal fighting robot, others look like they have giant metal buckets on their heads. However, this oddball array of robot designs only serve to add to their personalities, yes that's right, each robot, much like their pilots, will have their own distinct speciality and personality. As testament to this, Warner Bros have produced a fun app that lets you design your own Jaeger, choosing from 4 or 5 options for each body part.
- The Humans
Many of the humans you see on screen will be doing the same thing. Staring in horror or running away screaming like they just saw a giant alien climb out of the sea. Others, aka the main cast, will stand defiantly to "cancel the apocalypse". There are some interesting choices for leading cast members, with Charlie Hunnan playing the dashing hero and Idris Elba as the staunch leader of the resistance. Many folks though, are excited to see Charlie Day swap comedy for action as Dr.Newton Geiszler, a role that will surely serve to add the much needed injection of wit and humor that all good sci-films need. Finally, let us not forget that Ron Perlman is also in this movie. RON PERLMAN!
So there you have it. You're now prepped and ready for possibly one of the most absurd, but brilliant science fiction films in recent years. What Pacific Rim will give us is a chance to tap into our inner child. If this film doesn't take itself to seriously, it's going to be an absolute blast.
