'Westworld' Reveals a First Look at Shogun World During SXSW

At HBO's Westworld panel during the South by Southwest festival this weekend, by far the biggest surprise was an appearance from Elon Musk. But it wasn't the only surprise (spoilers for season one below).

Series creator Jonathan Nolan also revealed some clips of the new samurai characters who will be appearing in Westworld's second season this April. He and the other panelists (Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden) also confirmed that an alternate theme park called Shogun World will play a role in the story, which was speculated after Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, Lost) was added to the main cast.

These clips haven't been released to the public yet (we'll update this article if they do come out), but Shogun World was hinted at during the first season finale, which included a number of samurai hosts.

According to those present who saw the hidden footage, the first big scene showed protagonists Dolores and Teddy preparing to hang a number of humans they've captured, with Dolores waxing poetic about humanity and her programming before slipping a noose around her victims' necks and promising that a "reckoning" was here. This is no big surprise, as she was shown hunting down human tourists during the first season two trailer.

Once this first clip ended, it transitioned into a teaser which included a shot of two samurai armies running into battle, one of which was led by Sanada's mysterious character. And Maeve, who'd left Westworld, is apparently living in Shogun World now, as she appears walking into the samurai battle while wearing a kimono.

Westworld season two premieres April 22, 2018 on HBO.
