HBO's upcoming TV-movie adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, the famous novel by Rad Bradbury in which society bans books in favor of TV, is fast approaching its May 2018 release date.

And while we previously got a glimpse at how that movie would look, HBO has now released a full-length trailer and we can finally start to see how this new adaptation - which stars Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) as Guy Montag and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water, Man of Steel) as Fire Captain Beatty - will offer up its own take on the story.

See the full trailer below:

Notably, on an aesthetic level, this looks a lot like a cyberpunk movie.

The numerous wide shots of the city clearly resemble Blade Runner with a less distinct style and a little extra Michael Shannon, and other details like the mind-altering eye drops and excessive neon whenever there's no fire onscreen do point to HBO capitalizing on the recent cyperpunk trend that currently includes Blade Runner 2049, Altered Carbon, and to a lesser extent, Duncan Jones' Mute.

And story-wise, they seem to be making some expansions as well. Montag's rousing speech on the dangers of books, and an extremely bizarre meeting between Clarisse McClellan (played by Sofia Boutella from The Mummy and Kingsman: The Secret Service) suggesting a conspiracy seem like bizarre but not too surprising ways of padding out Bradbury's novel.

But changes aside, the acting seems solid. Jordan and Shannon, as "firemen" who now burn books instead of extinguish fires, both look suitably menacing until Montag's inevitable turn - it helps that both of them have played high-profile villains recently, and Jordan does seem to be channeling some Killmonger at the beginning of the trailer. What little we see of Boutella also seems strong.

The Fahrenheit 451 movie comes out May 19, 2018 on HBO.
