There is a certain low-budget aesthetic that most people expect when they hear the words "fan film," but it's 2018 and things have changed. You don't have to have access to a remote island and millions of dollars worth of equipment and editing software to create a high-quality film, which is what writer/director/editor Mark Alex Vogt and his crew just proved with "Odyssey: A Star Wars Story." A project over two years in the making, the 12-minute fan film tells a story that fits perfectly inside the Star Wars universe but without most of the familiar characters.

"Our goal for this project is to show you the gritty and intense struggle that rebel squads faced in the years before the death star," explains a statement on the official fan film website. With the help of backers on Kickstarter, the filmmakers were able to complete the film by shooting on location on a beach, in an abandoned Spanish fort, and on a set built inside of a storage unit. Behind the scenes videos posted to YouTube show how concept drawings were brought to life using handmade costumes and props and some pretty good sound design and CGI. In some areas you can tell that the production didn't have the same $265 million budget of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but what they were able to accomplish with the available resources and a deep, genuine love for the universe is impressive. "The Star Wars saga has inspired generations of young filmmakers," Vogt and his team wrote. "Our team was no exception. The purpose for this project is to give back to a saga and community of fans that have inspired us to keep creating. We always wondered what a war film would look like in the Star Wars universe. We answered the question by deciding that we would make a short film to show just what we thought it would be like."
