Who Will Become The 12th Doctor This Sunday?
Doctor Who fans, the moment you have all been waiting for is nearly upon us. This Sunday, August 4th, the BBC will make a live announcement to reveal who will play the 12th Doctor. For weeks now, fans have been hotly debating just who this might be. Here are some of the more popular suggestions:
- Idris Elba
Already popular with his role as BBC's Luther, Idris Elba strutted his way into the hearts of sci-fi fans last month playing Pacific Rim's Stacker Pentecost. Placing Idris Elba in the role of the 12th Doctor would be as popular as it is unlikely. Rarely do the show's creators choose actors as established as Elba, especially if they are already busy with other high-profile productions. Later this year Elba will hit our screens in what will surely be his defining role, playing Nelson Madela in Justin Chadwick's Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. Add this to appearances in Thor: The Dark World and 2 more films in 2014 and it looks like Idris Elba is fairly booked up.
- Peter Capaldi
This is one we would really like to see. Peter Capaldi was hilarious as the angry, foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in Armado Ianucci's The Thick of It and In the Loop. Perhaps he will bring similar characteristics to the role of the 12th Doctor? You can just imagine him threatening to shove his foot up a Dalek's arse during one of his famous vein-bulging tirades. Joking aside though, Capaldi is a man of extreme talent. There is no doubt he could take a character like the Doctor and really make it his own. Perhaps that's the reason he is one of the hot favorites to be revealed on Sunday.
- Chris O'Dowd
O'Dowd started his steady rise to fame with a hugely popular role in the hugely popular British comedy show, The I.T Crowd. Since then he's appeared in a series of high profile productions including; HBO's Girls, Bridesmaids and a starring role in HBO's Family Tree. He recently revealed that he had been cast in a secret role, which immediately sparked rumors and cries of "12th Doctor!", but it remains to be seen if he was referring to his unnamed role in Thor: The Dark World
- Helen Mirren
Oh you can almost hear the collective cries of glee from hundreds and thousands of Doctor Who fans if this one was announced. Not only would there finally be a female Doctor, but to have that female Doctor be a world class and much-loved actress like Mirren? Of course, it is probably unlikely, but crazier things have happened. After all, Mirren has expressed publicly her desire to play the role, so who knows?!
The list could go on and on, I mean, I haven't even mentioned Oliva Colman, Ben Daniels or Billie Piper (?!), and these things never go quite as fans expect. At least this time the news won't be leaked!
BBC America will be airing the live show at 2pm Eastern on Sunday August 4th.
