Step Inside Bowman's UFO Welcome Center
Meet Jody Pendarvis. A three-time candidate for Mayor of Bowman, South Carolina and the 'manager' of the town's UFO Welcome Center. Mr Pendarvis aka The UFO Man, built the UFO welcome center back in 1994 in an attempt to attract extraterrestrial visitors and since then, he's become quite the celebrity, so much so, that Vice Magazine travelled down to see this Bowman landmark for themselves.
Pendarvis spends most evenings sitting atop his saucer-shaped UFO Welcome Center watching the skies, making sure he is ready for his first interplanetary customer. The center is a precarious mixture of metal sheeting, ply wood and questionable foundations, which were all put together by the UFO Man himself. Pendarvis' fame in the local neighborhood might not have garnered enough support for a successful Mayoral campaign, but it has led to other commitments, commitments which limit the amount of time he can dedicate to skywatching. What are they? Women. Yes, Jody Pendarvis might well be the UFO Man, but he also considers himself to be a bit of a Lady's Man, juggling 7 girlfriends at any given time.
Despite the interest from the ladies, UFOs remain his true passion and Pendarvis tells of his first ever encounter with a potential alien visitor, recalling how he looked up at the night sky, seeing a large white object loom over him. Ever since then, he's dreamed of being whisked away on an alien craft, preferably to a mysterious alien world.
We doubt that intelligent life would select Bowman, South Carolina as their first landing point, but if they did, they would certainly be met with a warm welcome by the town's biggest believer, The UFO Man.
