Blomkamp's New Movie 'Chappie' is a Go
Riding on the coat tails of his latest sci-fi release, Elysium, Neill Blomkamp has managed to secure a green light from backers Sony and MRC on his latest project, Chappie. Chappie centers around an artificial intelligence that is stolen by gangsters who want to use it for their own evil purposes. District 9 and Elysium star Sharlto Copley will voice the titular robot, while Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame is also confirmed to have a role in the film.
During the process of selecting Matt Damon for the part of Max DeCosta, Blomkamp considered the rap group Die Antwood, of his native South Africa. While Ninja (of the aforementioned rap group) ultimately turned down the part of Decosta, he and fellow Die Antwood member Yolandi Vi$$er are reported to appear in Chappie, as two of the pictures leading figures.
Blomkamp is quoted as saying that Chappie will be "a touching story, but, you know fraught with gunfire." We can't wait.
