Fan-Made Wonder Woman Trailer Puts Pressure On DC Comics
The lack of a big budget movie featuring a female lead has become an increasing bone of contention with sci-fi fans and there has been much speculation as to why this is happening. Some have blamed the toy industry, which is inexorably linked with Hollywood sci-fi, for enforcing gender biases. Others theorize that the likes of Marvel and DC just don't believe a female superhero will sell at the box office. But if the aforementioned comic book giants think this will all blow over with the release of movies like Batman vs Superman and Avengers: Age of Ultron, this fan-made Wonder Woman short will have them feeling a little unsettled.
Created by Rainfall Films, the two minute trailer manages to pack in a load of action while also exploring some of Wonder Woman's origins as an Amazon Princess. Wonder Woman single-handedly takes down a group of masked terrorists, but it's back in her homeland that the action really steps up.
Within 24 hours of going live, the short movie has racked up over 1.5 million views on Youtube, a figure that will no doubt have DC comics and Warner Bros reconsidering their recent neglect of female characters. The video has been a trigger for fans to voice their opinions, with some calling for an online series and others challenging Hollywood studios to step up to the game.
