Eve Online Witnesses Biggest Battle Ever, Damages Totalling $300,000
Footage from yesterday's epic battle has now been uploaded and can be viewed up top.
An epic battle broke out in the multiplayer online universe of 'Eve Online' last night, with approximately 2,200 players racking up losses in the region of $300,000 in real-world money. The battle, which commenced at around 9:30am EST on January 27th, has raged for hours with some of Eve Online's most powerful coalitions getting involved....and it all started with an unpaid bill.
The massive world of Eve Online allows users to build and pilot customizable spacecraft ranging in size from small frigates right through to Titans. While most users don't part with real currency to progress through the game, a battle ready Titan, the largest ship available in Eve, can cost upwards of $7,500 to purchase. Players join huge corporations and alliances that control vast star systems and profit from the trade of virtual resources, but when the Nulli Seconda corporation failed to pay the rent on a space station that gave them control of vast swathes of space, the RUS Corporation and its allies swept in to seize control.
The battle was waged throughout yesterday and into the early hours of this morning and while the dust settles, estimates place the number of Titan ships lost in the battle at around 70 in total. The broader impact of the fracas will not be known until Eve Online issues a full report, however PC Games Network are reporting around 4,286 exploding ships at a cost of 9,628,129,832,493 ISK (Eve's virtual currency), which translates to roughly $284,000 in real-world currency.
While it may seem like a game to many, Eve Online players take to the game with a ferocious level of commitment which has put off many seasoned gamers. Last night's battle was the largest in Eve's 10 year history and fell on the anniversary of another costly battle, The Battle of Asakai.
