Who Will Win The Lead Role In Star Wars: Episode VII
With the lead villain role locked down by Girls star, Adam Driver, attention is starting to turn to the highly-coveted role of the new Star Wars hero. Variety is reporting that a handful actors have jostled their way to the front of the line, but which one will win out?
"After meeting with several young actors this past year, sources tell Variety that 'Downton Abbey' thesp Ed Speleers, 'Attack the Block' star John Boyega, Jesse Plemons and theater actors Matthew James Thomas, and Ray Fisher are among the men J.J Abrams is eyeing for the lead role. Though some insiders warn the search is still ongoing, multiple sources confirm to Variety these actors have moved to the top of the list in recent weeks."
So, in other words, they still have no freakin' idea which way they want to take this character? Ok, that may seem a little harsh, but looking at the names on this list, you can't help but notice that they all possess wildly different qualities. Theatrical actors with little to no experience on the big screen, an actor who have recently achieved fame on the back of successful TV shows and an up and coming actor slogging his way through some lower budget film productions. I'm not saying either one could do the job better than the other, but doesn't this all seem a bit odd? They haven't even decided which ethnicity they want the lead to be and, while that shouldn't be a driver behind this type of role, it shows that there are some serious divisions within this Star Wars team.
Personally, I would love to see someone like John Boyega take hold of this lead role. He showed a lot of raw passion in 'Attack the Block', which in a comedic film like that, is no small achievement. Added to this, the word circulating at the moment is that, over the last 3 years he has grown to become an incredible talent, something that is apparently evident in 'Imperial Dreams' which received rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
