Movie Voice-Over Legend Hal Douglas Dies, Age 89
He had the best voice in the business, one that most people would instantly recognize without being able to put a face to it. Movie voice-over legend Hal Douglas has passed away after almost 40 years of laying his gravel-laden tones onto trailers for some of the greatest movies ever to hit the big screen. The passing of Douglas, aged 89, marks the loss of a true entertainment giant and one of the industry's bonafide 'good guys'.
Through his work on countless movies, Douglas immortalized the phrase 'In a world...', a phrase that struck a chord with a whole generation of trailer-watchers. Along with Don LaFontaine and Don Morrow, Hal Douglas owned his industry in a fashion no actor could ever dream of. He never once succumbed to the lure of moving to Hollywood, instead conducting the vast majority of his work from a studio in New York City. His work included the trailers for classics like Forest Gump, Waterworld and Coneheads.]
Douglas is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ruth, his two sons Jeremy and Jon, and his daughter Sarah.
