Watch Footage From The Darth Maul Star Wars Game That Never Was
Darth Maul almost had his own video game and based on this leaked footage, it would have been glorious! According to Game Informer and Polygon, Red Fly studios in Texas commenced work on the Darth Maul game in 2010, but thanks to an all too common slice of mismanagement, the game never made it to release.
The game was touted for a multi-platform release, but when the decision to resurrect Maul in The Clone Wars was made, things started to turn awry. A lack of communication over continuity issues was just one of a whole laundry list of problems, though. When George Lucas stepped in and requested that Maul be joined by another Sith to make a co-op 'buddy' experience, the game swiftly went the way of so many other great prospects.
This news is likely to spark a furore among Star Wars fans and gamers who have so often been promised brilliant projects, only for sub par offerings to make it into release in their place. With the cancellation of 1313, it seems likely that we'll see a five year gap between the last original Star Wars release, Force Unleashed 2, and the closest upcoming release, Battlefront 3. It boggles the mind that this incredible universe, a universe that gave us Knight of the Old Republic, Rogue Squadron and Battlefront, has not yielded anything of not for almost half a decade.
But things are starting to look up. Disney's buyout should hopefully lead to some products with a production value worthy of the Star Wars universe. While Battlefront 3 will be the title on everyone's wish list next year, the prospect of an open world Star Wars game, teased by Disney bosses, is both terrifying and incredibly exciting.
