A Justice League Movie Is Coming in 2017 And Zack Snyder Will Direct It
It's official. A Justice League movie is being made and Zack Snyder is going to direct it. Two nuggets of news that will come to no surprise to anyone who has taken an interest in Warner Bros.' creation of a new DC cinematic universe, but that doesn't mean that these same people weren't jumping for joy when the news broke yesterday.
While no release date has been confirmed, THR believes that Zack Snyder's Justice League will debut in 2017, just one year the release of Batman vs Superman. Rumor has it that the two movies will shoot back to back, with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot all reprising their roles from the 2016 release.
If this release date is correct, it's likely that the Justice League movie will be our first look at, among other things, the new Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman. Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have always preached a different approach to that of Disney and Marvel, but featuring a Justice League movie before a number of DC's inevitable origin movies serves more of a purpose than just simple differentiation. After Martin Campbell's hot mess from 2011, a Justice League movie will serve to ease fans into the idea of a new origin exploration for the Green Lantern. It will also lend support to DC's niche characters like Aquaman and Flash who, despite their massive popularity among comic book fans, may benefit from a Justice League crutch in their introduction to the masses of more casual DC fans.
Martian Manhunter and Cyborg remain the final pieces of the Justice League puzzle, but THR believe the latter is close to being nailed down with Broadway actor Ray Fisher close to signing. Cyborg is scheduled for a brief cameo appearance in Snyder's Batman vs Superman, but it's believed he will play a major role in the Justice League story. Initially introduced as one of DC's Teen Titans, Cyborg aka Victor Stone proved remarkably popular, a fact which led to his introduction as a key member of the Justice League in the collective's 2011 reboot. The presence of Martian Manhunter is unconfirmed, but this I for one believe it is essential to a successful Justice League movie.
As for villains, there's not been any word on who will be antagonizing the Justice League just yet, but with Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor playing a major role in Batman vs Superman, he is one name that is likely to appear on the cast list. But who else could be picked from the seemingly endless list of Justice League bad guys? Personally, there's only one chap I want to see battling the likes of Superman and Wonderwoman, and that's Mr. Omega himself, Darkseid.
Theories and opinions aside, this is great news for comic book fans everywhere. It gives us the cinematic exploration the DC universe deserves and it should serve to keep Marvel on their toes. Now we can sit back and enjoy as the DC rumor mill starts cranking up to 110% capacity.
