Brian Van Holt Will Star in Syfy's Ascension
"Cougar Town"'s Brian Van Holt will join the upcoming science fiction thriller, "Ascension." He will play a lead role, along with Tricia Helfer, of "Battlestar Galactica" fame.
Although the title implies that there is some kind of spiritual ascension taking place, the show actually has a fairly straightforward sci-fi premise in which no angels or demons seem to be present. In an alternate historical timeline, during the beginnings of the space race JFK sent a spaceship with hundreds of men, women, and children in order to find another planet to populate for a century-long space journey. The show takes place in the present day (or November 2014, when the show will be released), when this mini-society has been in space for fifty years. A young woman is murdered under mysterious circumstances, and the inhabitants of the ship begin to realize that there may be more to their mission than meets the eye.
Van Holt will play Captain William Denninger, who is described as a fearless leader and adroit politician. Helfer will play his wife, Viondra, a power-hungry, snake-in-the-grass type, with whom he has a turbulent relationship.
The show will be a "limited event" series, airing six episodes sometime in November.
Watch the trailer above to see the dark, ominous tone of the series, as well as a creepy, indoctrinating version of the Pledge of Allegiance that goes: "I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America, and to this journey, to which I'm held, to conserve the race of humanity."
