Pacific Rim 2 To Be Released in 2017, Plus an Animated Series!
Pacific Rim 2 is really happening. The news just broke that the highly anticipated Pacific Rim sequel will be in theaters on April 7, 2017.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Guillermo del Toro, who helmed the first film, was working on the script for the as-yet-untitled sequel. "The characters I love will return," said del Toro. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."
A sequel was not necessarily a given, considering that the first film performed poorly domestically. But it was an unexpected critical success, and became a box office hit when it accrued nearly 75% of its gross in international markets.
But possibly even more exciting is the development of an animated series based on the franchise. The series will come out at some point before the release of the sequel, and we couldn't be more excited. Check out the fan art below to see the massive amounts of potential in this idea:

The films take place in the 2020's, when Earth is at war with humongous, vicious monsters from another dimension called Kaijus. In order to level the playing field, the humans build equally humongous humanoid robots called mecha. And then, of course, they fight each other. The sequel will see the return of stars Charlie Hunnam and Mako Mori.
