Brandon Routh Is Returning To The DC Universe As The Atom In CW's Arrow
Brandon Routh is set to return to the DC universe as a major character in season 3 of CW's Arrow. No, you didn't hear us wrong, this is a very real announcement that the man who played Superman in the abominable Superman Returns is back on the scene for yet another stab at a DC Comics character. THR has just confirmd that Routh will play Ray Palmer a.k.a 'The Atom' in the upcoming season of the increasingly popular Arrow.
While the reaction to headlines linking Routh back to the DC universe may cause fans to panic, the details are much more positive. The Atom's introduction into the Arrow storyline can only be a good thing. Palmer's wacky experiments and abilities will add yet another exciting element to a show that is fast becoming one of the best comic adaptations in years. Indeed, the issues with the 2006 Superman Returns can not all be pinned on Routh himself. Scriptwork, production and casting all contributed to make Singer's effort a potentially destructive one for the franchise. The team behind CW's Arrow have been making a great number of positive moves as they develop its third season and this is another appointment which fans should have faith in despite its ties to a nightmarish past.
In DC's comics, The Atom is able to shrink himself down to a sub-atomic size after harnessing the power of a white dwarf star. The character's addition to the Arrow series along with the Flash spin-off will only serve to heighten speculation over which characters will start to show up in DC's big screen productions as the they and Warner Bros. build towards a momentous Justice League movie in 2018.
