New Pictures and A Semi-NSFW Red-Band Clip from Lucy

A new, extended clip from the upcoming sci-fi action film Lucy tries to sell the movie as a kindred spirit to Besson's previous work, "La Femme Nikita."

They're clearly trying to market this as an uber-feminist film, with the official synopsis reading: "From 'La Femme Nikita' and 'The Professional' to 'The Fifth Element,' writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in 'Lucy,' an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic."

But from the above clip, this doesn't necessarily come across. She's obviously strong and intelligent, since she's superhuman and everything, but therape-revenge trope as a substitute for more sophisticated feminism is a little icky, for lack of better words. But it's rape-revenge lite, I suppose, so hopefully Lucy will turn out to be an empowering character. Plus, considering the pathetic dearth of female action heroes that we have going for us, we'll take what we can get.

Lucy follows a woman who is forced to work as a drug mule for the Taiwanese mob. When a drug balloon accidentally leaks into her system, she becomes a superhuman mutant, with the capacity to use more than 10% of her brain at a time. This affords her abilities such as telekinesis and instantaneous absorption of knowledge, as well as providing her with a kill switch for her emotions.
