Gotham Will Tease a Potential Joker Every Week
We know exactly which character will become Batman, Catwoman, and Penguin in the upcoming prequel series Gotham, but the pre-Joker has been conspicuously missing from the proceedings thus far. Now, fans will be pleased and/or frustrated to hear that the show will eventually reveal the little Joker, but will at first tease one character that might be the Joker in each episode and let the speculation run wild.
In the pilot (spoiler!), a character who is ominously named the Comedian takes the stage and does a stand-up routine. Early reviews naturally assumed that he would become the Joker, but it turns out that the character is just the first of many potential Jokers, and that a different contender will appear every week to make tantalizing allusions to the classic villain. They'll smile, they'll clown, they'll all be played by relatively unknown actors, but only one will rise to the top of the notorious Gotham crime scene.
This may infuriate some viewers, but we like it. After all, they'll need a lot of showmanship to even begin to compare to Heath Ledger's iconic performance.
