Hayley Atwell's Agent Peggy Carter to Appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron
Peggy Carter first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger as a World War II officer and Rogers's wartime love interest. She was set to appear in a small role in The Avengers, in which Rogers meets Carter as an old woman, but this scene was cut and reworked for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She then gained massive popularity after the release of her own Marvel One Shot, Agent Carter, which directly led to the production of her own series of the same name. The series will follow Peggy after the events of The First Avenger, in which she joins Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), in order to co-found the first version of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Now, Atwell has confirmed that Joss Whedon will be writing her into Avengers: Age of Ultron, the eleventh installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
"We went out drinking one night and he was like, 'You know, it would be great to write something for you.' And I was like, 'Yes, Joss, it would! It would be amazing!'" said Atwell
Although no details regarding her role in the film have been released, speculation has, of course, already begun. Her character is elderly and debilitated in the current timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and she already appeared as an old woman in The Winter Soldier, which makes it seem less likely that she will not appear in person in Age of Ultron. Theories include flashbacks, dream sequences, and memories, but the most interesting idea thus far involves the The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), as, according to Whedon, the Scarlet Witch has the ability to "get inside your head."
Watch Atwell in Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015 and in Agent Carter on ABC in January 2015.
