Rumor Mongering: Joss Whedon Won't Direct Avengers 3?
Bad Ass Digest reports an extremely vague rumor that Joss Whedon is disillusioned with Marvel and has no desire to direct another Avengers film after the upcoming Age of Ultron. Among the tenuous pieces of evidence: no director has ever worked with Marvel more than twice, and Whedon may not be an exception to the rule.
There is yet another rumor regarding Whedon's potential replacement: Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. Guardians is already projected to be successful, and Gunn reportedly has an excellent relationship with Marvel, but really there isn't any more substance to the rumor than that, unless you count his response to the question of whether he would return for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. Gunn stated in the interview with BadAss Digest, "Actually my contract just says another Marvel film, it doesn't specify."
But, then the interview took an even more ominous turn: "So I took a leap and asked him, 'How far along are you in negotiations with Kevin Feige to direct Avengers 3?' I have seen James Gunn in social settings and in press settings, and at this moment I saw James Gunn in one way I had never before seen him: speechless. He kind of sat there gobsmacked for a second. And then he said, 'It was great seeing you!' as our interview time was up." (However, when the same publication asked Kevin Feige whether Gunn would direct the third Avengers film, the answer was a definitive no.)
It may be easy to apply some logic to these rumors, but it still doesn't seem all that likely. Although Gunn is a talented director, fans would likely be mutinous if Whedon were replaced. We'll just have to wait and see.
