Spider-Man Spin-Off Sinister Six Gets a Release Date!
Contrary to recent reports from the internet rumor mill, the Spider-Man villains vehicle Sinister Six is not only alive and well, it now has a release date that knocks the next Amazing Spider-Man film back a few years. The film is slated for November 11, 2016, while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be released in 2018 and the film Uncharted, based on the Playstation video game, will move into the June 10, 2016 spot.
In the last few days, reports surfaced that the Sinister Six film was dead in the water, with Badass Digest's Devin Faraci writing, "Every day that passes I hear more and more scuttlebutt that makes me think 'Sinister Six' is dead or dying," and movie blogger El Mayimbe releasing this alarmist tweet:
But apparently, all that worry was for nothing, as Sinister Six is clearly still kicking. Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, World War Z) will write and direct, with Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group stating, "With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016." Goddard recently stepped down from showrunner of the upcoming Daredevil Netflix series, leading to speculation that he was forced to drop out as a result of production on Sinister Six beginning earlier than anticipated.
This new development has lent credence to the speculation that Sony was using the planned Amazing Spider-Man 2016 release date as a placeholder for Sinister Six. Originally, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was set to be released in the summer of 2016 and the fourth film in 2018. But then, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while technically a box office success, performed below expectations. It failed to outperform the first film in the series, as well as the most recent Captain America and X-Men films. As a result, many believed that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 film would be pushed back, and possibly that Sony never actually intended to release it in 2016, but rather claimed that date until they could announce the release of Sinister Six.
In the comics, the original Sinister Six was composed of Electro, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Vulture and Sandman. As Electro was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it would seem likely that he will appear, except for the fact that (spoiler!) he was killed by the end of the film. But, of course, in the world of science fiction you just never know. Other (live) villains who were introduced in the film who are possible contenders for the Sinister Six are the Green Goblin, played in this incarnation by Dane DeHaan, Black Cat, played by Felicity Jones, and Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti. Plus, in an Easter egg, Doctor Octopus's infamous tentacles were seen in the background of one scene of the movie. Venom was part of a later version in the comics called the Sinister Twelve, but it seems unlikely that he will play a major role in this film as he will helm his own spin-off.
