Divergent Deleted Scene: Watch the Brutal Eye Stabbing that Didn't Make It Into Theaters
In one of the most memorable scenes of the smash young adult novel Divergent, a fellow Dauntless initiate is stabbed in the eye with a butter knife in the dead of night. Fans were disappointed when this unsettling scene didn't make it into the movie version, but now they can see it in a deleted scene released online and on the Blu-Ray.
In this short but eventful video, Tris (Shailene Woodley) is sleeping when she hears blood-curdling screams. They find the character Edward lying on the floor with a butter knife sticking out of his eye. Chaos ensues, while Tris stays calm and tries to comfort him. Her nemesis, Peter (Miles Teller), is suspiciously nonchalant, and Tris looks at him in such a way that we know he was responsible.
In the books, this scene occurs directly after the Dauntless rankings are announced. Peter is jealous of Edward, who finished first, and so ruins his chances of making it through initiation. Ultimately, Edward is forced to become factionless, the series' version of an untouchable caste. This scene may have been cut for any number of reasons; as the film already had a long running time and many side characters that were not adequately introduced to the audience members who had not read the novels, it's possible that they were trying to streamline the plot and eliminate the necessity for getting the audience to care about Edward as a character. It's also possible that Teller's character is meant to be slightly more sympathetic in the films than he is in the novels, particularly since (spoiler!) he boards the train with the protagonists at the end of the film. But most likely, the scene is just too dark, either for the ratings system or considering the overall tone of the film, which had a distinctly YA feel to it. Other similarly disturbing scenes were cut from the book, such as a girl falling to her death during an initiation event and a sexual assault of the protagonist.
