Thanks For The Memories - Watch Marvel's Phase 1 & 2 Retrospective From Comic Con
In 2008, Marvel started their bid to dominate the blockbuster corner of Hollywood with Iron Man, the opening movie in Phase 1 of their Cinematic Universe. 6 years and billions of dollars in box office revenue later, Marvel has become the biggest name in in blockbuster filmmaking having introduced a whole new generation of fans to classic characters such as Captain America, Thor and most recently, the Guardians of the Galaxy. With a legion of fans constantly looking forward to the next big Marvel product, the comic book giant changed pace at Comic Con this year, airing a retrospective video exploration of their Phase 1 & 2 projects.
It really is quite staggering what Marvel has achieved since Robert Downey Jr. first donned the Iron Man suit in 2008. Kevin Feige's vision of a Marvel Cinematic Universe was incredibly ambitious, but to say that ambition has paid off is something of an understatement. A decade ago, the idea that a Captain America movie could stand up to the might of a movie containing both Batman AND Superman would have been laughable. Now, the game of release date chicken being played by the two comic book behemoths shows how far Marvel has travelled over the last few years. We're not suggesting that Captain America 3 could outperform Batman vs Superman, but the fact that the matter is even up for debate proves the klout the Marvel products possess.
With the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron next May, Marvel's Phase 2 will draw to a close. We already know that Phase 3 will introduce two more characters in the form of Ant Man and Doctor Strange, and with Marvel execs stating that they have movies planned for at least another decade, their domination could be set to last for a long, long time.
