Godzilla 2 Gets 2018 Release Date
Godzilla will return to terrorize/save the world once again, but not for almost four years. Legendary announced that the sequel to the popular monster movie reboot is scheduled to be released on June 8, 2018.
The delay is most likely an accommodation of the director, Gareth Edwards, who directed the first movie and who will have his hands full for the next couple of years directing one of the Star Wars standalone movies. Since the film is relatively far off, plot details are thin, but it was revealed at Comic Con that Godzilla would face a myriad of other titanic beasts in the sequel, including Mothra, the villain from the first film, as well as Rodan and Ghidorah.
The first film was a critical and financial success, earning over $500 million worldwide and a 73% approval rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. There may be additional sequels if the franchise continues to be viable, with Guillermo del Toro expressing interest in a Pacific Rim crossover and Gareth Edwards proposing a sequel based on the Monster Island concept.
