Watch the Fan Video that Inspired Doctor Who's Season 8 Title Sequence

As a love letter to a devoted, even rabid fanbase, showrunner Steven Moffat used ideas from a viral Doctor Who fan video when crafting the title sequence for the upcoming eighth season of the long-running sci-fi classic. Watch the fan video here:

Hanshaw claimed that the "mantra" of the video was "Journey through space and time," and he means that quite literally. We swoop through the gears of the Doctor's watch as a "metaphor of time travel and the time vortex," run into the beloved TARDIS, watch the seal of Rassilon and Doctor Who logo appear and burn away, and finally see the face of Peter Capaldi as the sinister Doctor reflected in the closed pocketwatch before it tumbles into a black hole. "I wanted it to feel ancient/steampunky," said Hanshaw.

Moffat decided to use concepts from the video in a new title sequence after the video went viral, garnering over 700,000 hits. The Doctor Who showrunner gave credit where credit is due when speaking to a New York fan event: "Hanshaw created this title sequence, put it up on YouTube. I happened to cross it, and it was the only new title idea I'd seen since 1963. We got in touch with him, and said, OK, we're going to do that one."

The Doctor returns on August 23, with the premiere episode titled "Deep Breath."
