The UK's Channel 5 preview for Gotham is here, and it includes all-new footage of "the original city of sin," an anti-love letter to New York City.

The clip is introduced by Ben McKenzie, who will play Gotham's stalwart hero, Commissioner Gordon, while he's still a young, fresh-faced detective. His partner, who may or may not fall on the wrong side of dirty, tells him that this "isn't a job for nice guys," and that "sometimes you need to do a bad thing to do good," because that's not a slippery slope or anything. The police department in general is shown to be as corrupt as the criminals, since "you can't have organized crime without law and order."
Many classic DC villains make an appearance, including the Riddler, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Penguin, who promises us "chaos" and "reapers of blood in the streets." But even though Robin Lord Taylor has already been cited as a stand-out as Penguin, I'm most intrigued by Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy is known as a "supervillainess" in DC Comics, and Batman's archenemy, but in Gotham she's just a little girl. In the comics, her origin story doesn't begin until she goes to college, so she may not appear as a villain for a long time, if ever. She happens to be approximately the same age as Bruce Wayne in this adaptation, and especially since Ivy grows up with emotionally distant parents, there's a possibility that she and the newly orphaned Bruce Wayne will form an ill-fated friendship. Maybe even a romance, especially since later she develops the ability to kill with a kiss.
The first season of Gotham will premiere on September 22, 2014, and will consist of sixteen episodes.
