It Happened In Roswell - A Musical Re-Telling of a Classic UFO Story
By now, we're probably all familiar with the story of the famous Roswell Incident. But what happens when you add a few songs to the mix?
A zany, sweet, and certainly entertaining sci-fi musical entitled "It Happened In Roswell" is shaping up to be a must see for harmony-loving UFO believers.
Co-director Terrence Atkins states that, at first revision, there was no mention of aliens. After meeting locals from Sedona, Arizona who claimed to have been abducted by aliens, Atkins's short play evolved to fully embrace its science fiction roots.
He cites E.T. as a large influence in how the play evolved - "I really loved the humanity... and the whole connection of how the alien works its way into the human's lives. I thought of this image of a young innocent alien girl coming to Earth and if she knows nothing and has no real idea of right from wrong from our p.o.v, how can she change and adapt?"
Set in July 1947, the backdrop of a small New Mexico town gives this musical an old-timey quality that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Main character tabloid reporter Scoop O'Reilly is desperate for a story, so, with his hilarious sidekick in tow, he heads for Roswell, NM. There, he's greeted by the overly-friendly locals, and one gorgeous alien named Nine-O. Nine-O could be his big break, but she's also probably the most beautiful creature he has ever laid eyes on. Scoop faces a choice between making a giant leap in his career or giving into his feelings for this beautiful visitor from another planet.
If you're lucky enough to live in the L.A. area, you can find out how the story ends this week. It Happened In Roswell is playing this weekend at the NoHo Arts Center and will likely be touring later this year.
