Marvel Taps Joaquin Phoenix to Play Doctor Strange
Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto, Patrick Dempsey, Jack Huston. These are just a few of the big names that have been rumored for consideration for the Dr. Strange role. But now, the casting rumor mill may come to a halt, as Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly entering into final negotiations to play Dr. Stephen Strange.
Phoenix was rumored to be in talks for the role as early as mid-July, but speculation still ran rampant that the role would be given to another actor, especially after more than a month passed without confirmation. However, an insider told Collider that the contract was as good as signed, and that negotiations had only been lengthy in order to ensure that Phoenix would have the freedom to take on other roles during his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Joaquin Phoenix has been nominated for three Oscars, for Gladiator, Walk the Line, and The Master. He recently appeared in the offbeat science fiction romance Her, in which he played a man who falls in love with an artificially intelligent operating system. He almost joined the DC universe instead of the Marvel universe, as he was considered for the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but the role ultimately went to fellow Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg.
