Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig in Talks to Star in Ridley Scott's The Martian
Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig are in early talks to star in the Ridley Scott-helmed adaptation of Andy Weir's sci-fi novel, The Martian.
The Martian follows an astronaut named Mark Watney whose crew is forced to abandon him on Mars during a killer dust storm. All alone on a foreign planet, he's forced to rely on his technical skills and scientific knowledge to survive Mars's treacherous environment. The novel was self-published on Amazon, but then after receiving critical acclaim and audience attention it was sold to publishers and made the New York Times bestseller list.
The protagonist, Mark Watney, will be played by Matt Damon. Drew Goddard of Cloverfield and World War Z fame was set to direct, but was forced to drop out due to obligations for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man spin-off, Sinister Six. Ridley Scott reportedly replaced him in May. The film is scheduled to be released on November 25, 2015.
