Firefly's Sean Maher to Star in Sci-Fi Indie ISRA-88
Firefly and Serenity star Sean Maher was cast in the lead role of the indie sci-fi thriller ISRA-88. The film will be directed by Thomas Zellen, who previously worked on the clone thriller The Island, which starred Scarlett Johansson. Sean Maher most recently appeared in Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing and Arrow.
The film follows a pilot and a scientist who make up the crew of the spaceship ISRA-88, who are on a mission to find the end of the universe. Maher's character slowly becomes unhinged on the long-term spaceflight, and after 13 years, they find the end of the universe and "crash into the unknown." It will begin shooting in Michigan later this month.
Firefly only lasted one season, but is still beloved to this day and launched several successful careers. Morena Baccarin was nominated for an Emmy for her turn on Homeland, Nathan Fillion has found mainstream success in his starring role in the lighthearted procedural Castle, and Gina Torres has had significant roles on high-profile television shows such as Suits and Hannibal. Alan Tudyk lent his voice to Frozen and the upcoming Big Hero 6, Jewel Staite has had prominent roles on shows such as Stargate: Atlantis and The Killing, and Summer Glau has become a cult figure in the science fiction community, appearing on Dollhouse, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Arrow.
