Simon Kinberg Confirms Jean Grey, Storm and Cyclops Will Be Recast For X-Men: Apocalypse
X-Men Producer, Simon Kinberg, has confirmed that original trilogy favorites, Jean Grey, Storm and Cyclops would be recast if they are to appear in the upcoming X-Men Apocalypse. In an interview with Yahoo, Kinberg said that Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, and James Marsden would not be reprising their roles due to the obvious continuity issues of Apocalypse being set in the past.
If we included some of the original X-Men like Storm and Jean and Scott and other in Apocalypse, yeah we'd have to recast them, as Apocalypse takes place a good twenty years before [the first] X-Men, which was now, insanely, a good ten to fifteen years ago," said Kinberg. "It would be really hard to do. Halle and Famke and Jimmy and others have done such wonderful jobs of bringing those parts to life, and are so identified with those parts now. So it would be a tall task. But I also would have said before First Class that there would be no actors who can stand alongside Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart."
Many believe that X-Men Apocalypse will chart the forming of the X-Men as we all know them, and after Bryan Singer said it would be "more of a First Class sequel", such a notion seems increasingly realistic. So really, Singer is right, it's a no-brainer. As great as they all look, there's no feasible way you could have 40+ year old actors playing the likes of Storm and Cyclops alongside a Professor Xavier who hasn't even broken 40 yet.
The news came as Singer was answering fan questions for Yahoo. Almost all of those questions revolved around continuity and even Singer himself found himself stuttering as he tried to place all of the X-Men movies in plot-chronological order. So, it begs the question...what the heck is going to happen after Apocalypse?! We could be looking at X-Men being one of the most chronologically complex movie series of all time. That is if it hasn't already secured that title following Days of Future Past.
