Marvel Comics Channels 1970's Original For Star Wars #1 Variant Cover
The release of the first Marvel Star Wars comic title since 1987 is less than three months away, and it's safe to say I'm pretty excited. I adore what Dark Horse has done with the franchise since they picked it up in the 1990's, but the whole Disney takeover meant change was inevitable. Marvel has brought in some of their best talent to work on their new original trilogy comic book series, with Jason Aaron (Wolverine, Ghost Rider) writing the story and John Cassaday (Planetary, Astonishing X-Men) illustrating, I've got high hopes that come January when Star Wars #1 is released, it's going to be a huge hit.
Those hopes have been bolstered today with the release of a variant cover for Star Wars #1, provided by Entertainment Weekly.
As you can see, the new cover is more than a little reminiscent of Marvel's first ever Star Wars title, and that's exactly what was intended. Alex Ross was asked to put his own photorealistic spin on the 1977 work of Howard Chaykin, and as you can see from the original below, he's done a pretty great job!
