Firefly's Morena Baccarin Joins Cast of Gotham
Firefly and Homeland alum Morena Baccarin will join the cast of Gotham in a recurring role, which is expected to become a series regular role in the second season. She will play Leslie Thompkins, a DC Comics character who will play a significant role in the upcoming Arkham Asylum plotline.
Her official character description reads: "A gifted and dedicated physician who was a friend of Thomas and Martha Wayne. She is determined to use her skills to aid Gotham's most in need, which currently means working at the newly opened Arkham Asylum's Home for the Criminally Insane. In addition to her medical skills, her coolness under pressure will serve her well as she finds herself drawn close to James Gordon and into more and more dangerous waters."
In the comics, she was a surrogate mother to Bruce and helped him on his way to becoming a vigilante. She was also an idealist, working to help the underprivileged population of Gotham. If this holds true for her television character, she would be a refreshing departure from the rest of Gotham, and an interesting companion to Gordon. I personally would be happy if she served as a new love interest for Gordon, as the character of Barbara is just not working, but this would be a departure from the comics.
Baccarin has become an acclaimed actress, with her turn on Homeland earning her an Emmy nomination. She has also become a familiar face to sci-fi fans, with regular roles on Firefly and V, as well as a recurring role in Stargate SG-1.
