Rumor Mongering: The Russo Brothers to Replace Joss Whedon for Avengers: Infinity War?
Joss Whedon's name has become all but synonymous with the Avengers franchise, but that may all change after the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, as the Russo brothers are rumored to take over for the next sequel, Avengers: Infinity War.
Deadline recently reported: "I keep hearing [Joe and Anthony Russo] will step up to the ultimate Marvel all-star team and take the reins of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that next film that will shoot back to back."
"That next film," of course, refers to Avengers: Infinity War, which will be split into two parts. This is clearly still an unsubstantiated rumor, as the author declines to name any specific insiders or clarify whether the directors are actually in talks or simply being considered. Plus, it has never been officially confirmed that Joss Whedon will depart the Avengers franchise.
Although I'm sure most Avengers fans would be happy to see Whedon stay the course, they probably couldn't ask for more qualified replacements than Joe and Anthony Russo, who were behind this year's Captain America: Winter Soldier and will helm the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War. Winter Soldier has been widely hailed as the best Marvel movie so far, with Avengers and Iron Man as possible spoilers, and judging from the comics, Civil War will most likely be awesome unless they really screw things up. And if Joss does leave the franchise, hardcore fans will likely have mixed reactions. As a big Whedonite myself, I would be happy to see him spend more time developing material with a little more freedom, or maybe even getting back to television.
Avengers: Infinity War part 1 will be released on May 4, 2018, while part 2 will be released on May 3, 2019. You can see the full line-up of comic book movies through 2020 in our infographic below.
