Elle Fanning, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Hailee Steinfeld Rumored for Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse
With X-Men: Days of Future Past essentially resetting the entire series, young versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm will all appear in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, which will take place in 1983 and serve as an X-Men origin story. Casting rumors have already begun in earnest, particularly for the young Jean Grey, with big names such as Elle Fanning, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Hailee Steinfeld all rumored to be on the shortlist for the role.
According to The Wrap, an inside source confirms that Fanning and Moretz have both met with Fox about the role, and that Steinfeld is also being considered by the studio. Much lower-profile names are on the shortlist for the young Cyclops, which includes Interstellar's Timothee Chalamet, Red Band Society's Charlie Rowe, and British actor Ben Hardy. This indicates that Jean Grey, who has a romantic relationship with Cyclops that has been prominently featured in the comics and previous X-Men films, may have a larger role in the upcoming films.
All three actresses would likely be great choices, as Moretz has experience playing comic book superheroes (Kick-Ass) and Steinfeld's steely turn in True Grit was one of the best young female performances in recent memory. Fanning is arguably the least intuitive choice based on her previous roles, but she's an extremely talented actress who consistently gets rave reviews for her work. And with recent films such as Maleficent and Young Ones mostly relegating her to waify, insubstantial roles, it would be refreshing to see her play a stronger character.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set to be released on May 27, 2016.
