The Star Wars Rumor Mill Awakens: When Will The Trailer Drop and What Will The Villain Look Like?

The Star Wars rumor mill has been somewhat subdued over the last few weeks, but that all changed when rumors of teaser trailer details started appearing online. This week, two big questions are being asked by Star Wars fans everywhere.

1. When will the teaser trailer drop?

2. What is the identity of The Force Awakens' Main Villain?

Teaser Watch

Let's address the teaser release. First off, isn't it absolutely insane that the release date for a teaser is getting this much attention? It's not even the first full trailer we're talking about here, it's a trailer which, if the rumors are to be believed, really doesn't show much in the way of actual footage at all. That just shows the power that the Star Wars franchise holds over all of us.

The fact that the teaser is coming soon seems to be a full-gone conclusion, but it's where it will first appear which is the source of debate. At present, opinion is divided as to whether it will first air on the big screen or during a Disney-owned television event. If the big screen wins out, you can expect the teaser to air in a slot before the year's last remaining blockbuster event, The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies, which premieres on December 17th.

However, SlashFilm released a story yesterday stating that Disney has "bigger plans" for the teaser trailer and plan to release it before the third installment of The Hobbit premieres. Slashfilm continue by offering up a few major events that Disney and LucasFilm could look to exploit for releasing their trailer to as many people as possible.

Could the Star Wars teaser air during any of the following?

1. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

2. Star Wars Rebels

3. ABC's Thanksgiving Football Game

SlashFilm do admit that these are all educated guesses, and there's a very real possibility that Disney and LucasFilm's "bigger" plans include an event away from TV, such as a surprise press announcement as per the method Marvel used to announce their phase 3 line-up. One thing is for sure, though. We're all going to have to monitor the situation very, very closely if we're going to want to stay on top of this one!

Who or What is the Villain in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

Onto the next big question. Is the Force Awakens' villain revealed in the teaser and, if so, what do they look like? According to various noises on the internet, a select few people have been lucky enough to witness the teaser trailer first hand. Reports from some of these people suggest that the teaser will swiftly flash through the movie's key characters before showing a shot of the Millenium Falcon in action and....the movie's villain. Serial rumor-mongers Latino Review suggest that they have heard the villain's mask appears to be a cross between KOTOR's Darth Revan and an original trilogy Imperial Guard.

Revan isn't a canonical character, and even if he was it's incredibly unlikely JJ Abrams would use him as The Force Awakens' big bad. Knights of the Old Republic, the only property to feature Revan, is set more than 4000 years before the events of The Force Awakens, and I find it hard to believe that Disney and LucasFilm would risk showing that much of a flagrant disregard for established non-canonical timelines, just to put one character into play. As much as I love Revan, it seems more likely that the villains mask will be more of a nod to this ancient and powerful Sith Lord than anything else. On the flipside, the idea that the villain could be a fallen Imperial Guard is far more plausible. Sporting a number of cybernetic enhancements and a deep anger in seeing their Empire destroyed, an Imperial Guard would make an incredibly fearsome and driven villain.

What are your thoughts? Would an Imperial Guard make a suitable villain?
