Norman Reedus Cried for an Hour While Filming The Walking Dead's Mid-Season Finale
The Walking Dead's mid-season finale airs a week from Sunday, and it seems that Robert Kirkman's characterization of the episode as "deadly" may not be an empty threat, as one scene made fan favorite Norman Reedus cry for over an hour.
In a recent interview, Reedus said of filming the harrowing scene, "I sat on an apple box with my head between my legs and just bawled for an hour. I really wanted to not tear up during the scene, I wanted to be like I wasted every tear in my body before we started shooting so I just sat there and cried and cried and cried."
After last season's mid-season finale killed off one of the show's most beloved characters in the most gruesome of ways, no one is safe (except Daryl, because we will riot), and Reedus's statements further fuel persistent rumors that a major character will be killed in the upcoming episode. Since we already know it will take place in the hospital, where Beth and Carol are currently being held captive, they seem to be the most likely contenders. Both are good friends with/possible love interests for Daryl, so it makes sense that the deaths of either of these characters would elicit an emotional reaction from Reedus.
But which will it be? Beth has been gaining in prominence recently, finally becoming a fully fleshed-out character after years on the show. Carol has been undergoing a transformation for a while now, and is considered by many to be the MVP of this season, and one of the most interesting characters overall. Both have very devoted and vocal fanbases, particularly since shippers are split over which character Daryl should end up with. I hate to say it, because I personally love Beth, but she seems like the more likely candidate. The Spoiling Dead claimed that an inside source confirmed that Beth would die in the mid-season finale, although there are other circulating rumors that she will only appear to die, like Judith in last season's mid-season finale. But Carol dying is not at all out of the question, as many speculated that her extremely emotional response to the fanbase at New York Comic Con was the behavior of an actress who was "on her way out." This sounds like more tenuous evidence, but she started crying after saying the words "It's been the time of my life," which sounds very much like a goodbye.
Could it be another character? I would love to say yes, because I don't want either of these characters to die, but Reedus's statements seem to indicate that Daryl will have a particular emotional response that will really only make sense if he's a little bit in love with the character. In his words, "[Daryl]'s one of those characters where they keep dangling a carrot in front of him and he keeps reaching for it but the carrot falls in the mud right before he's about to get it."
