Flash vs. Arrow Drops Huge Bombshell About Oliver's Past, Return of Presumed Dead Character
The first hour of the Flash vs. Arrow crossover event delivered on all the promises of the trailer, as it combined the two teams and saw a fight between the titular superheroes. But it also delivered several surprises, including a run-in between Oliver and his ex-girlfriend whom he unknowingly impregnated, as well as the return of Ronnie Raymond, who was presumed dead after the S.T.A.R. labs explosion.
In season two, flashbacks revealed that Oliver had impregnated an old girlfriend, played by Anna Hopkins, before he was in the shipwreck. Oliver's mother then convinced her to lie to Oliver and tell him that she had lost the baby. She didn't tell him about the child when they ran into each other in last night's episode, but viewers can be assured that the woman- who still doesn't have a name- will be back in the near future. "The person who we see in the Flash-Arrow episode will make another appearance on the show this season, but we're not sure if it's going to be on Flash or Arrow," said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. He went on to say that the reveal of the child "is going to have major repercussions on 'Arrow' down the road."
It's never explicitly stated that Oliver is the father, but it's certainly implied, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim finally confirmed to EW that Oliver is, in fact, the child's father: "Ever since [episode] 220, the idea that Oliver may have had a kid-and now we're finally confirming it-is something that I put under the same category of Felicity's backstory. We have ideas and we know what we're going to do, we don't necessarily know when we're going to do it."
Flash vs. Arrow also saw the return of Ronnie Raymond, played by Robbie Amell. Ronnie has thus far only been seen in flashbacks, as he was presumed dead when he was trapped in the particle accelerator explosion. His appearance in last night's episode revealed that he did not die, but rather became a metahuman with the ability to shoot fire from his head and hands. This comes as no surprise to fans of the comics, as the Ronnie Raymond character goes on to become the superhero Firestorm, but it will have reverberating effects on the dynamics in the show, especially considering that his fiancee, Caitlin Snow, has been grieving his death for a year. Danielle Panabaker, who plays Snow, said of Ronnie's return, "[Caitlin] does not handle [his return] well. She's spent the last year grieving the loss of Ronnie. And then she thinks maybe he's back, or she lost her mind. Seeing him in a very different form is extremely challenging for her."
Flash vs. Arrow concludes tonight on Arrow at 8pm on the CW.
