Benedict Cumberbatch Confirmed to Play Doctor Strange
Another Sherlock Holmes actor is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Tumblr MVP Benedict Cumberbatch has officially joined the upcoming Doctor Strange film as the titular superhero.
According to Marvel, the film will will follow "the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions." There had been rumors flying around that Doctor Strange wouldn't be an origin story, but that plot summary makes it seem like it will be pretty much what everyone is expecting.
In addition to his breakout role on BBC's Sherlock, which won him an Emmy and several BAFTA nominations, Cumberbatch also starred as the villainous Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness, and will appear as Smaug in the upcoming Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He also recently starred in the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game, which earned him critical acclaim and plenty of awards buzz, as he is now considered to be a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination.
Doctor Strange is set to be released on November 4, 2016.
